Troubleshooting Biometric Verification Issues
Introduction
Section titled “Introduction”Biometric verification — matching a client’s live selfie against their identity document photo — is a core component of modern identity verification. While the technology is highly accurate, certain conditions can cause biometric checks to fail for legitimate clients. This guide covers the most common biometric issues and how to resolve them.
Common Biometric Issues
Section titled “Common Biometric Issues”-
Poor lighting on the selfie
- Symptoms: Biometric match score is too low, or the system cannot detect a face in the image.
- Cause: The client took the selfie in a dark room, with strong backlighting (window behind them), or under harsh directional lighting that creates deep shadows.
- Resolution: Ask the client to face a natural light source (e.g., a window) or use soft, even indoor lighting. Avoid direct overhead lights and backlit environments.
-
Face partially obscured
- Symptoms: The system cannot complete the biometric comparison.
- Cause: The client is wearing sunglasses, a hat with a brim casting shadows, a face mask, or a headscarf that covers the face contour. Heavy makeup or face paint can also affect matching.
- Resolution: Ask the client to remove sunglasses and hats, and ensure their face from forehead to chin is fully visible. Religious or medical head coverings that do not obscure the face are generally acceptable.
-
Significant appearance change since document photo
- Symptoms: Biometric mismatch despite the client being genuine.
- Cause: The document photo may be several years old, and the client’s appearance has changed significantly — weight change, aging, facial hair growth or removal, or cosmetic procedures.
- Resolution: If the match consistently fails and the client is genuine, consider requesting a more recently issued identity document. If no newer document is available, escalate for manual review.
-
Camera quality issues
- Symptoms: Low-resolution or grainy selfie that does not capture enough facial detail for accurate matching.
- Cause: The client is using an older device with a low-resolution front-facing camera, or the camera lens is dirty.
- Resolution: Ask the client to clean the camera lens and, if possible, use a device with a higher-resolution front-facing camera.
-
Liveness detection not responding
- Symptoms: The liveness prompts do not detect the client’s movements.
- Cause: The client is too far from or too close to the camera, the environment is too dark for motion detection, or the client’s device has limited processing power.
- Resolution: Ask the client to hold the device at arm’s length, ensure good lighting, and close other applications that may be consuming device resources.
When to Suspect Fraud
Section titled “When to Suspect Fraud”Biometric failures are not always innocent. Investigate further when:
- The client repeatedly fails liveness detection despite clear instructions
- The selfie image shows visible signs of a screen or printed image being held in front of the camera
- The biometric match score is not just low but zero — indicating a completely different person
- The client becomes uncooperative when asked to retry under better conditions
How Athenty Can Help
Section titled “How Athenty Can Help”Athenty, a verification intelligence company, provides Smart IDV and KYC services with advanced biometric verification capabilities.
-
Active liveness detection: Smart IDV uses randomized prompts and depth analysis to confirm a live person is present, defending against photo, video, and deepfake injection attacks.
-
High-accuracy face matching: The biometric engine accounts for natural appearance variation and aging, reducing false rejections for legitimate clients.
-
Guided selfie capture: On-screen indicators help clients position their face, adjust to proper lighting, and follow liveness prompts correctly.
-
Fraud signal alerts: When biometric failures exhibit patterns consistent with fraud attempts, the platform flags the session for compliance team review with supporting evidence.
Conclusion
Section titled “Conclusion”Most biometric verification issues are caused by environmental factors — lighting, camera quality, and obstructions — that are easily corrected with clear guidance. By helping clients understand what the biometric check requires, businesses can resolve the majority of issues on the second attempt. For failures that persist or show signs of fraud, escalation to your compliance team is the appropriate response.
