Operating Transfers

Operating Transfers records movements of the firm’s own money between two of your operating (general) bank accounts — sweeping a deposit account into payroll, consolidating balances at month end, and so on.

This is ordinary bookkeeping, not trust. An operating transfer never touches a trust account, a client’s money, or a matter. There is nothing to attribute — it only relocates firm cash between accounts you control.

Each transfer is a single balanced journal entry:

  • Debit the destination account’s bank GL — its balance rises.
  • Credit the source account’s bank GL — its balance falls.

The firm’s total cash is unchanged; only which account holds it changes. The entry appears on the General Ledger, on each account’s bank journal, and on the Trial Balance, exactly like any other posted entry.

  1. Open Accounting → Operating Transfers (or the Operating Transfers card on the Accounting overview) and click New transfer.
  2. Choose the From and To operating accounts. They must differ and share the same currency — cross-currency transfers are not supported.
  3. Enter the amount and date, plus an optional memo (for example a wire confirmation number).
  4. Click Post transfer.

The new transfer appears in the table for the selected period, showing From → To, the amount, the memo, and its status.

Posted entries are append-only. To undo a transfer, use the Reverse action on its row. That posts an offsetting entry returning the funds to the original account; the original stays in the ledger marked reversed, preserving a complete audit trail.

Operating transfers can be posted by owners, admins, and accounting / bookkeeping staff (users carrying the Bookkeeping Management add-on).
